Steelers pulling for Pengiuns in Playoffs

The Super Bowl Champs have been seen regularly at the Penguins games, but even more so, now that it’s playoff time, and the Pens are facing the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals. Specifically, Ben Roethlisberger, James Farrior and Jeff Reed, are just a few among others spotted at Mellon Arena during the Pens bid for Sidney Crosby’s first Stanley Cup. They were seen earlier in the week at the game 1 win by Pittsburgh and plan on attending the next home games.

Farrior made comment when asked about his hockey interest, by saying, “Any sport in this town we will support it, because we know we get the same support,” said Farrior. “It was fun being out there and good seeing a win. Whatever sport they have in Pittsburgh I am that fan. I enjoy watching hockey.”

The current players get extremely warm receptions by the crowd on hand, the same may not be true of former coach Bill Cowher now lives in North Carolina and has been a common site at Hurricane games. Cowher even sounded the ceremonial warning siren prior to a Stanley Cup playoff game.

“I saw him do that a couple of games ago,” said Farrior. “I was hoping he would get the chance to come to Pittsburgh so he can get booed.” Farrior jokingly went on about Cowher, who grew up in Pittsburgh, saying he’s become a turncoat since leaving the team.

“Definitely he has, that is where he lives now.” Farrior said, “That is where he wants to lay his loyalties. It is what it is. I hope he has the chance to come to Pittsburgh to watch a game. We will treat him real well.”

Personally, I can understand how he routes for his local team. Since, moving to Los Angeles, I’m definitely looking for the Kings to do well in hockey, any excuse to party in the streets, right? But, I don’t know that I can ever cheer against my childhood team? Go Pens Go!!!!

Harrison will not attend the Steelers meeting with President Barack Obama

On Thursday May 21st, President Obama will welcome the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers to the White House to honor the team for its recent dramatic victory. Just like he did in 2006, when the Steelers enjoyed the ritual post-title meeting with George W. Bush, James Harrison will not be there. His reason why he’s declining a chance to meet the President.

“This is how I feel — if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don’t win the Super Bowl. As far as I’m concerned, he [Obama] would’ve invited Arizona if they had won.”

Okay, we understand your statement, but we’re also talking about one of the most historic presidents ever, but I forget why…cmon James, put your ego aside for a moment and take the chance that many of us would. By the way, the Steelers did win the SuperBowl and you now have the priviledge of being invited to the White House, stop complaining and show pride, in your team and country.

Pittsburgh Steelers McFarlane Collectibles

Todd McFarlane, best known as the creator of the comic book series Spawn, is also one of the coolest designers of collectible figures. Among other things, McFarlane toys creates highly realistic and detailed figures of current and former NFL stars. The best thing about this for Steelers fans is that McFarlane toys has produced more collectibles for Steelers players than for probably any other team. The collectible figures are brilliant recreations of some of the top current and former Steelers greats and for Steelers fans who love to collect, they are a lot of fun to collect and display. The other great thing about these figures is that they are sold new at a very reasonable price ($12-$20 at most toy stores and online). Most of the Steelers figures sell out fast, probably due to the size of Steeler Nation and and the popular demand. This makes them valuable collectibles over a period of time. For example, McFarlane produced a 12″ version of Jerome Bettis several years ago which originally sold for around $25. It is almost impossible to find it available now, even on ebay, for under $125. Not bad appreciation, eh? McFarlane obviously recognizes the purchasing power of Steeler Nation and the popularity of these collectibles, with each new series of NFL stars they produce, there always seems to be a Pittsburgh Steeler included…and that’s great news for us. McFarlane Toys is now on their 22nd series of NFL superstars, they also make an NFL Legends series and a new series is the NFL/College Series, where you can get some of your favorite NFL stars in their college uniforms. McFarlane makes these guys in 3″, 6″, and 12″ versions, although not every figure is produced in every size. Below I’ve included a complete list of all the Pittsburgh Steelers McFarlane collectibles that have been created to date, with pictures. Also listed are the Steelers players that McFarlane has announced they will be including in the next few upcoming series 20, 21, and 22. 2009 NFL Draft – Steelers Picks

Round 1, Pick 32 (32) Evander Hood DT 6’3″ 300 Missouri
Pick Analysis:The Steelers snag the energetic Hood at the bottom of the first round to upgrade their depth along the line. Though many pegged Hood as a “one-gap” interior tackle, his combination of strength and movement fit in nicely as a 3-4 defensive end. With the luxury of learning behind a veteran crew, Hood should develop into a starter in a year or two.
Round 3, Pick 15 (79) (From Broncos) Kraig Urbik OT 6’5″ 328 Wisconsin
Pick Analysis:The former Badger is a tough, blue-collar player with the ability to create a push along the line. Though he has limited athleticism, he gives the team a quality young player with the potential to develop into a versatile starter.
Round 3, Pick 20 (84) (From Bears through Broncos) Mike Wallace WR 6’0″ 199 Mississippi
Pick Analysis:The former Rebel is a pure deep threat with outstanding speed and quickness. With Nate Washington leaving via free agency, Wallace has a chance to become an instant contributor as a third or fourth receiver for the Steelers.
Round 3, Pick 32 (96) Keenan Lewis CB 6’0″ 208 Oregon State
Pick Analysis:Lewis made 48 starts in college. I’ve heard he’s had some troubles with his tackling, but he’s a solid press corner. He made a name for himself at the Senior Bowl.
Round 5, Pick 32 (168) Joe Burnett CB 5’9″ 192 Central Florida
Pick Analysis:The Steelers get a talented but undersized corner prospect with Burnett. The former Golden Knight has good ball skills and should compete for a playing time as a possible dime corner candidate.
Round 5, Pick 33 (169) (Compensatory selection) Frank Summers RB 5’9″ 241 UNLV Pick Analysis:The former Rebel is a bruiser and has the skills to shine as a fullback or short-yardage specialist in the Steelers’ offense. He could potentially steal some touchdowns from Willie Parker.
Round 6, Pick 32 (205) Ra’Shon Harris DT 6’4″ 298 Oregon Pick Analysis:Harris was a one-year starter, which is a concern. He’s good against the double-team and has push up the middle. Harris performed well in the Shrine Game, and that helped him quite a bit. He’s fast but sometimes struggles with his conditioning.
Round 7, Pick 17 (226) (From Buccaneers) A.Q. Shipley C 6’1″ 304 Penn State Pick Analysis:Shipley is short and has short arms compared to the prototypical center, but he’s still an outstanding football player. It’s tough to be in the NFL at his height and with his arm length, but he has very good ability. He will fit in well with the Steelers as a local Pennsylvania boy.
Round 7, Pick 32 (241) David Johnson TE 6’2″ 260 Arkansas State Pick Analysis:Johnson is an H-back and a Steelers-type player with quickness and the ability to run vertical routes. He had 16 yards per catch in college. He’s a good fit for what Pittsburgh tries to do on offense.
